Double Equals Operator?

G

Greg Lovern

Looking for a list of exactly what the EXACT function does differently
from the equals operator, I noticed that Excel's help for the EXACT
worksheet function says:

You can also use the double equals (==) comparison operator instead of
the EXACT function to make exact comparisons. For example, =A1==B1
returns the same value as =EXACT(A1,B1).

But when I try that, I get a formula error. Does Excel have a double
equals operator?

Thanks,

Greg

Until now I never heard of a double equals operator.

Only in 2007 help would you get that<g>

Check out help on operators and you will see no such animal.

What version of Excel are you using?

Using XL2007, I see no mention of "==" in the Excel help page from
either online or "on this computer". And "==" returns a syntax error,
as you discovered.

Oh, but I do see it when I use google to find
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/exact-HP005209081.aspx.
Oddly, that web page "applies to Excel 2003", and there is no "==" in
XL2003 either, AFIK.

I see that the text about the double equal operator is similar in that
link. However, the lower-right corner of my help window says
"Offline", indicating "Show content only from this computer". As far
as I recall, it's been that way since I installed it.

I've been spending so much time with someone's Win7/XL2007 computer
(on borrowed time), I neglected to look at my own XL2003.

In XL2003, the offline (local computer) EXACT help page has no mention
of "==", but the __online__ Exact help page does. It's just wrong,
AFAIK.

I find no mention of double equal to "= = " operator, somehow to test
for equivalance I use =A1=B1 and I get results like TRUE or FALSE. I
hope that is what you are looking for.
