Double-Clicking Template "Opens" instead of "New"

I need to be able to simply double-click a .dot file and have it open a "new"
..doc file instead of opening the actual .dot file as it is doing right now.
That's how it always worked before, but ever since I updated from Office 2002
to Office 2003, I've had this one complaint.

I'm sure it's a setting somewhere, but I don't know where it is. I know to
simply right-click on the template and select "New", or go throught File -
New - Template... but I can't expect my co-workers to know that. Besides,
isn't that the whole point of creating a template file?

I'm having the same issue in Excel 2003.

You probably just need to "reregister" Word to reestablish the file
associations. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm

For those of you that found this string and want the answer...

To reregister Word:

Start | Run
In the prompt, type: "winword /r"
(Notice the space before the forward slash)
Hit Enter.

To reregister Excel:

Start | Run
In the prompt, type: "excel.exe /regserver"
(Notice the space before the forward slash)
Hit Enter.

Doing these two things "reregisters" Word and Excel and restores the
original defaults, but didn't kill my addins or anything.
