Double clicking on file opens some but not all of the same file ty

I am really stumped on this one? When I double click on a file it opens with
some files while not opening with others. I am running Vista. It is totally
radom as to what it opens and what it does not.

I can open up the file from the actual program that I need to open it with
by going to file/open and finding the file that way. When I double click on
the file in the folder that it is in it says "cannot find the specified file.
make sure that you typed the name correctly" It is there. I just opened it
the other way.

I would just like to click on the file and have it open as I have done a
million times before. This is happening with .doc , .docx and .xls files?

I know that I am not alone as there are others with the same problem. I
cant wait for the fix of Vista in six months?

It is very time consuming and frustering.

Oh yeah. Brand new latop out of the box.....

when vista does not open the file with the proper program, did it prompt
you?

The one I worked on did. I then choose program, browse to the desire program
and select it, check always open with this, ok that seem to work

Of course you can go into tools, folder options , file type to set them up

No. It gives me the error message that windows cannot find the file
.......... make sure you typed the name correctly. Some files I can right
mouse click on it gives me the Open with prompt and I specify Word for
example it sometimes opens that way and sometimes it does not. It is
extremely random as to what files it opens and does not within the same file
type. It has done it with shortcuts that I have set up.

It will open the specified file every time if I open up (Word for example)
to open a word document and go to file and then open and find the file. But
if I double click on the exact same file within the specified folder it gives
me the "cannot find the file, make sure you typed the name correctly"
message.

I have tried to find the cure for this all over the web and there are many
others that have the same problem but I have not found the correct answer. I
have tried installing the compability pack from Microsoft.... just about
everything.

It started happening about two days ago after working with my brand new
laptop for about one week with no problems at all.

It is driving me crazy!

Hi Matt,

Do you have Norton AntiVirus installed, per chance? If so, try disabling the Office plugin in NAV settings.

How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in:
