double click on folder ( xcel,word) will not open

double click on folder ( xcel,word) will not open. Will open when I open
through the particuliar program ( word, excel)

I have xp pro hbm

Do the document icons correspond with the program colors? Excel is green
Word is blue..

yeah, pretty sure. Did not catch any color changes.

The computer in question is my laptop that I left at work. One file that I
tried to open is an excel and word file on my flash. I just plugged the
flash on my home xp computer and they opened fine. The excel was generated
on the laptop and opens at home just fine. Again, the only way the laptop
would open was by opening excel and and doing a file open.
