Double-Click on directory short-cuts brings up Search.

I’ve facilitate locating information by moving directory shortcuts from
the “my favorites” pull down menu into individual directories. Prior to
implementing the directory printing tool described in Microsoft's
Knowledge Base article 321379, double clicking on a directory shortcut
brought up the linked directory. It no longer worked after implementing
the tool, a known problem with a registry fix I’m somewhat insecure
about implementing. .

Since I have a greater need for fast directory shortcuts than to print
directories, I’ve sought to back out the changes. I’ve deleted the
custom .bat files, and Norton System Works has deleted the links to them
from the registry. HOWEVER, DOUBLE CLICKING A DIRECTORY SHORTCUT STILL
BRINGS UP THE FIND DIALOG BOX.

The dialog box brought up when exploring the registry using RegEdit from
RUN, under Directory/Shell/(default) shows a blank entry in the “data”
box. I had assumed this was the default setting, but I note that it
contains “none” on my other WinXP Pro machine. Inserting “none” into
this dialog box was implied by the “fix” listed in Knowledge Base
Article 321379. (I am very hessitant to make any changes to the
Registry.) I suspect making that change to the Registry will eliminate
my problem, but I’D LIKE TO KNOW if implementing The Directory Printing
Tool caused the deletion of the term “none” from that part of the
Registry or was something else responsible for the behavior change.

"none" is the correct setting. Go ahead and fix that entry.

Yes. This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries
via File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for folders. (example)

But the last part of that article explains it exactly.

More information - from my notes:

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
(Tip from David Candy)

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

-or-

Fix "Search" Opens Instead of Explorer:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

-or-

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")
