I downloaded a template from the microsoft templates and then tried to save
it as a doc file but when I did a file save as I was not able to choose a doc
file of for that matter any other file as it was grayed out.

I tried just renaming the extension and I ended up with a file.doc.dot

Any ideas appreciated
Thanks

Hi Dig-

You _cannot_ save a template as a document. Template files (.dot) are models
on which new documents are based. The new files then get saved as documents
(.doc), and each new file based on the Template starts off the same way.
(i.e., every plain new file you create in Word is based on a template named
Normal.dot)

The 2 file types are quite different, so just changing the extension does
nothing but potentially corrupt (distroy) the template file.
