Ok here we go again. Once again let me explain. I have
windows xp. It wont let me log in to anything which
includes safe mode and all the rest. Why? Because it
continuely tells me that the dmboo.sys file is corrupted.
I wanted to fix this by replacing the file using a startup
disk. After I booted up with the start up disk I found i
couldnt read NTFS files because the 98se startup disk *9x
disk* wont let you see the NTFS files. Well, I then
inturn found a program that would allow me after booting
up the win98 startup disk -and they all celebrated- *yeah!
* Anyway, I went and got on another windows xp machine
that i have and copied the dmboot.sys file on to a
floppy. I then attempted to COPY OVER THE FILE TO REPLACE
THE DAMAGED -DMBOOT.SYS- file. Now remember, this is all
being done in dos because i cannot under any curcumstances
log into windows itself in any way shape or form. When I
tried to copy that file it told me -ACCESS DENIED-. So
now I am trying to find out how to locate *or if the disk
already has the command* or run the command to log into
windows xp from dos into my administrator account
prompting me for a password. Remember I CAN NOT LOG INTO
WINDOWS XP IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. Thank you

NOTE it will not allow me to use the "repair option"
because the dmboot.sys file is corrupted. This is not an
option for me either.

you don't need to boot into windows to use the repair
option.
change your bios to boot from the cd drive first, put in
you xp cd and reboot. do the repair install from the cd
don

ack! I cant do that! When i put the cd in it will load
so far then tell me that the dmboot.sys file is corrupt.
I keep typing that.... letting folks know that. See if
you want the winxp cd to do a "repair" first you have to
have the computer do two things, One: load the dmboot.sys
files and then two: load the ntfs.sys files. Now that we
know that..... you'll realize that I CAN NOT boot with the
cd after changing the boot sequence to cd first because it
doesnt matter: The DMBOOT.SYS file is corrupted. I...
Need.... Too.... Replace.... The..... DMBOOT.SYS file!!!!
I'm losing it here..... so does anyone know how to get the
start up disk to request a windows xp password from me in
dos? Thank you

When you boot from the cd it doesnt load any files, from yr hd, other than
those installed on cd.
You were probably not able to overwrite file because of the attribute
setting

then your only other option is to do a format and complete
install from the cd. xp does not have true dos, only a dos
emulator from within windows.
when you use a win 98 boot disk all you are using is the
files on the floppy. do the format and reinstall.

See response to an earlier identical post. Note that people are all
round the world, and may only look in daily - if that - wait 24 hours
before posting a query again

What exactly are you doing when you boot from CD? You can't just sit
there and do nothing and expect the boot routine on the CD to run.
Every BIOS I've run across (I'm tempted to just say EVERY BIOS but I
know I have not seen them all) tells you at one point to press any key
to boot from CD. If you just sit there and do nothing, it then begins
the normal boot process from the HD.

You should not be experiencing these file problems if you are truly
booting from the CD. Watch your screen carefully. Watch the CD drive
and see if it is actually accessing the CD during boot.

I have a feeling this is user error and not the fault of your
computer.

The WindowsXP CD is the only one I have seen that asks you to press a key to
boot, this seems to be if it detects an OS otherwise it boots automatically.
Of The Award Abit BIOSes I have used all try to boot from whatever disk is
in there, usually with an error message asking for a system disk, it then
waits. If there is no CD it will announce a boot failure, then boot from the
next boot device in the BIOS.
If he is trying to boot from an XP setup disk he will need to press a key.
If he wants to be certain he should try another HDD, or disconnect the HDD
for troubleshooting purposes.
