I am running XP Home Edition and have applied Service Pack 2. How do I get to
a DOS prompt within this environment? I have checked Start > All Programs >
Accessories, and there is no reference to a "Command Prompt" option, which
has been the suggestion in Help text I have seen. Thanks.

Start > Run > cmd

Start > Run > command

Either will work.
Actually, neither will work.

There is no DOS prompt available using WinXP because WinXP contains NO
DOS code.

What you are getting is a Command Line Interpreter (CLI), NOT a DOS
prompt.

Start > Run > cmd

Start > Run > command

They're different. command is version 5.something of DOS; cmd is
the Windows XP command prompt.

I can't see any reason to use command, except possibly for a legacy
program. (All my 16-bit programs so far run just fine under cmd.)

I had a problem with the autoexe file (see this forum title reinstall
programs) the fix involved using what looked like dos to me and I got it
started by typing cmd in the run box, I run XP with SP2 so to say that xp
does not use dos is not strictly accurate.

Please explain.

You are correct that there is no true DOS prompt available in XP but XP
does in fact contain DOS code that is used to create an MS-DOS bootable
floppy. The bootable floppy contains the same version of DOS boot files
as WinME has.

Yep.
