Command Prompt

I cannot open Command Prompt [C:\] whether I type in "Cmd" in Run, or click
"Command Prompt" in Accessories, or try to open in Safe Mode with Command
Prompt. All that happens is that the computer restarts automatically. I have
checked "Event Viewer" and something has happened in the Control Center, but
EV cannot provide details. Win XP Home Service Pack 2 with latest updates.
Most grateful any suggestions.

Hi,

How about taskmgr.exe? If that fails too, then I would suspect a virus is
involved. Free virus removal tools:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/8/lng/us/tpl/v5/nid/3001#3001
http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/tools.shtml

Also, you may use this free on-line scanner:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Symantec also distributes many free removal tools that are virus-specific:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

Many are best run in Safe mode to minimize interference. Most will resist
removal in normal mode where they are active.

How to start in Safe mode:

Emergency system tools:

Hi,

I noticed that we have the same problem. in the last reply of Rick,
about a virus reasons, i doubt it is a virus, because i have installed
the latest anti virus software available and it is fully updated. But
when i try to open the COMMAND (CMD) in start menu>run>cmd it only
opens an error box :
16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
The NTVDM CPU has encontered an illegal instruction.
CS:0553 IP:0102 OP:c7 13 87 fa e8 Choose 'Close' to terminate
the application. (note: choices for this is CLOSE and IGNORE)

this is what i get. so please can anyone help me in on the solution to
this?
I really appreciate it.. Thanks...

cmd.com is a virus/trojan. Delete it, and follow-up with a thorough scan.

Whereas CMD.EXE is a legit system file, which launches the Command Prompt.
