DOS programs on XP?

Is it possible to run a DOS program on a Windows XP computer? If so how?

Many DOS programs will work just fine in Windows XP. Just run them like you
would any other program. However there is one rule and that is they are not
allowed direct access to your hardware, so this means old disk utilities for
example will not work. Programs like word processors, spreadsheets, and even
many games work fine.

If you are interested in running DOS games you might want to install
VDMSound, which is a utility that emulates legacy sound cards which most of
these game require. If you are not interested in games you do not need it.

Thanks for that quick answer, the program i have is for programming a
datataker which is attached with a cable from one of the com ports. Do
you think it is worth trying? Can I do any harm if it is not compatible?

If you are tech savvy, then create a new bootable partion on your
windows xp hard drive. You could install win98 on it or
first dos and then win95 which has the option of booting to
previous OS which in this case would be dos.

There are programs like BootItNG and Parition Magic/Boot Magic
that can make this more convenient but they have drawbacks.

I forgot to mention that my hard disc is NTFS, I have been told that you
can mess things up badly by trying to run DOS programs on NTFS. Any
comments?

You can get programs that will allow a DOS boot and then
reading/copying of NTFS files, but you can't run those NTFS
files under DOS.
