DOS programs use lots of dirty tricks that can speed up their
operation while at the same time endangering the integrity of
the operating system. This is one of the reasons why DOS and
Windows9X machines crashed frequently. WinXP will not
tolerate this sort of thing.

Use Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx),
or talk to the supplier of your accounting program about a Windows
version of their software

As an alternative you could install Win98 in a dual booting
configuration, provided that you don't mind the occasional
crashes..

Huh? I haven't seen a DOS-based accounts package in commercial use for at
LEAST 12 years.........
Isn't it time they got something better?

In addition I'm amazed that it's a) still supported and b) actually meets
current accounting requirements....

12 years? Come on now, Gordon, are you trying to tell us that there were
no DOS accounting programs in commercial use in 1995? DOS accounting
programs are still in use today and yes they do meet GAAP, if one needs
to change the format of the reports to suit newer reporting standards
that is no big problem.

No, I said I hadn't seen any SINCE 1995....

And as a Management and Systems Accountant I throw my hands up in horror! I
can't beleive firstly that any DOS accounting programs are still supported -
we moved from one in 1993 simply because the vendor was going to stop DOS
support then....
Secondly as a Management accountant I can't beleive that anyone SERIOUSLY
uses DOS-based packages in a modern accounting environment....

Make sure you have a blank diskette in the drive (no, I'm not kidding).

The only requirement any of the pre-2000 accounting programs need to meet
is to function with the 4-digit calendar year. Those that flunked Y2K are
out whilst those that passed with flying colors are still being used. The
old, text-based accounting programs are actually faster than their Windows
upgrades. And, the principles of accounting have not changed since the start
of double-entry bookkeeping...just the tax laws.

You gotta be kidding! You seem to be insinuating that all the guys
running WFW and Novell over DOS immediately abandoned their DOS
accounting software as soon as Windows 95 came out. You really can't
expect anyone to believe that, can you? Accpac Plus, for example, is
pure DOS accounting software and was very good and very popular
accounting software, and it *still* is good accounting software. It was
supported until just a few short years ago. Accpac for Windows didn't
come out until 2000 or later and you can be sure as hell that those who
paid $5,000 and more for the DOS Accpac Plus didn't rush out to stand in
line at the Accpac store just to spend another $5,000 to change their
software to the new Windows version!

And as a Management and Systems Accountant I throw my hands up in horror! I

How preposterous! Are you suggesting that DOS programs can't add and
subtract? Whether the programs run on DOS, Mac, Linux, Sun/Solaris/Unix
makes little difference! Accounting can be done with a pencil and
paper. Some mom and pop outfits do their accounting with the most basic
of accounting software or methods and at the end of the year they bring
their balances to their accountants and the accountant prepares
pro-formas for those who need it.

Have you tried setting a compatability mode for it? What program is it and
what rev? It might be you need a virtual machine to run it, or update to
something htat runs in windows.
Sounds like a bad business decision made somewhere there.

Well, your view is myopic or purposely blinded (e.g. closed minded).
Because YOU haven't seen something doesn't mean it doesn't exist by any
means. In fact, if you were around here, I could even show you an old dBase
II system running on CP/M at one of the local churches.

There are a great many DOS accounting systems still in use in many places
and there will be for a long time to come. Whether it's Peachtree or
Ashton-Tate, those are very useful, accurate and reliable applications. You
seem to be forgetting that DOS is only part of hte equation here.

I think it has to be the older 12" 90k diskette, doesn't it? Or was it
9"?
8" 50K or double density 100K. I have some from Intel and Maxell if you need
them.

Run the app on a PC that can handle DOS correctly.
