DOS problems Fullscreen

Hi

I have a P IV Laptop (Acer) and windows XP is just fine except for
this. Whenever i run the "runnable" DOS progs like Turbo C++, and
switch to the FULL-SCREEN mode, the entire screen is STUCK. and i am
not able to operate anything. all i can do is switch back to
windows...thats all. the DOS screen is stuck. however i am able to
work with DOS in the Window mode.
what is this problem? i have the same problem while running games like
DAVE etc. the sound remains stuck and i have to force shutdown to stop
that sound!

however my friends have the same version of Windows. it works fine. i
had a personal copy of Longhorn. DOS worked fine there too. (in the
fullscreen mode). i have Windows 98 in the dual boot mode. TC works
fine there too in fullscreen mode...

all the more interesting. once my comp took a little long time (about
1 min) to start up. i immeidately ran TC before all the services
started. i was able to operate TC in fullscreen!!! but then later,
after some time, the screen was jammed and i wasnt able to run. so i
guess its one of the services causing this problem...

Thanks to anyone who could solve this problem for me!

Windows XP does not have true DOS. What you see is an emulation of DOS.
You can try running the old programs in Compatibility Mode (see XP's
Help & Support for details). Otherwise, you may just have to accept
that those old programs will not run on your laptop.

Your friends may have the same version of Windows, but they don't have
exactly the same hardware as you do. That matters.

The solution is to either a) run older DOS programs on another machine
that runs native DOS; b) run something like VirtualPC and create a DOS
virtual machine and run the program there; c) find new programs that
will do what you want that are written for Windows XP.

This problem can also be with the video card drivers that are NOT VESA
compatible. Try updated version of the video card drivers.

thanks for your suggestions!

but how do you explain THIS fact?
i am sure the vid card divers would have been loaded right when u see
the welcome screen...
i even uninstalled Norton AV.
well, i am trying out one LAST option! Upgrading Windows to XP SP2...

This has to be the final thing i can ever do...
THanks!
