DOS driver needed?

I have purchased Gibson Research Spinrite. However, it will not recognize my
USB external backup drive. Gibson Research is rather vague on the solution,
saying that:

" However, there are DOS drivers available for USB and FireWiwe devices that
will allow you to run SpinRite. If you can get your USB or FireWire device to
"seen" by DOS, then SpinRite will have no problem testing the drive."

That being said, I have no idea how to install such a driver. I have an Intel
m/board with "USB Legacy Enabled". I have Windows XP Home, two 80 Gig internal
drives and the USB 250 Gig external drive.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

www.bootdisk.com claims to have a boot disk with a USB
driver. I wonder if it's going to be of any use to you, because
DOS is unlikely to recognise disks of the size in use these days.

I've spent some time trying to build a "DOS-USB" driver disk. It can be
done, but has a lot of quirks with Driver qualifiers. Actually, it's clunky
(Technical Term) at best. I use SpinRite 6 and have a bootable CD-R
that has a collection of DOS based tools, like PQMagic/Drive Image &
diagnostic tools. I also use an Intel motherboard but Legacy USB mode
on it will not work with my older Maxtor LE5000. Best I remember the
Maxtor Tech Support told me that when Legacy mode, DOS Boot is
done the 80 Gig drive will report it's size to these DOS tools as it's cache
size and not the drive itself.

Issues like these are why SATA-II externals are going to quickly take
over External storage from USB. Can't say for certain that you won't be
able to get it to work, but take an Aspirin first and plan to spend lots of
time on the web looking for drivers.

Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the external
USB device from whom you obtained the DOS USB drivers. (Hint: the
drivers would need to be installed on the DOS-bootable disk from which
you're running SpinRite, not on the PC's hard drive.)
