Doom 3 really sucks

and anyone plays it knows it

I just finished it and I loved it. Period

I bumped the gamma setting in the DoomConfig.cfg to 2.2 and it played
nice. Bind the flashlight to a close button and I didn't have a
problem switching when the time called.
Spooky and with my 9800 Pro I had nice eye candy and framerates.
I played it at 1152x864 medium quality setting. I have a P4 3.0 with 1
gig of ram.

Play something else if you don't like it.

No, I like it.

Speaking of far cry...I have tried the "Demo 2" and it has no save options,
is this because its a demo or can the game only save at certain times? I
keep getting myself killed, it is very difficult on easy even though I was
able to finish Doom 3 on medium.

There are regular save points that I found quite useful because they
"forced" me to play until I'd hit one, then I could quit. It added a bit
of tension to the gameplay, but can be annoying, especially later when the
going gets tough.

But there's a console cheat (I forget the details, but it might be as
simple as "save <whatever>"). You have to be careful, because it's
possible to save in places where you get problems, like getting stuck on
reload. But if you use it in sensible locations it works fine.

Tactically, FC needs a more careful style of play than something like D3.
If you're lucky you can even hide from the AI after they've spotted you.

Can't comment on D3 yet - although friend that has agrees with some of
comments here - corridoors, same old stuff, very linear.
Far Cry is totally different game, bust still FPS - fantastic
graphics/atmosphere/enemy AI -maps are huge & u can go pretty much
anywhere - BUY IT. Multiplay good but some maps are huge. Game autosaves at
certain points which is good as it makes you get better instead of F5 every
5 seconds - there is a 'technique' to allow manual saves pretty much
whenever - find by google search.
COD - traditonal War FPS ala Medal of Honour - but with much better
graphics. Multiply excellent especially like the 'kill cam' feature (replays
who just shot you from thei point of view - keeps camping down to a minimum
& can be disabled).

far cry requires that you "play it" rather then just walk and shoot.

A noob can should be able to finish Doom 3 without troubles. Far Cry
requires that you actually think before you shoot.

No offense, just true.

check out the review of doom 3 on gamespot. A site I don't always
agree with, but their review of doom is pretty much how I feel about
it. They game it an 8.5/10. Personally, I'd give it an 8/10. It's
good, not great, has it good moments, but more bad then good.

And a tip for others. Don't comment on a game bfeore you finish it.
Doom is one of those games where your opinion changes right around the
300th imp you killed. I thought it was great the 1st 3 hours as well.
then the next 3 I was like...is this going to get better of
different....then the rest I was like, would this ****er just end
already.

I got excellent fps in 1280x1024 on high though. Didn't expect that.

Actually, you can save in FC between save points. It's just not
documented. It will also have an assigned keystroke in the next patch.
Currently you do it from the console if you get into a sticky situation.

Most should put seta r_gamma "1.4" in their Doomcfg.cfg file.

Where is this file supposed to be located? I don't seem to have a copy
anywhere on my hard drive. And is the above string correct, verbatim?
Including "seta" instead of set, and the quotes around the value?
and it's not available from the game itself.. Then many play the game

Apparently it's available from the console, though the fact that there even
is a console isn't obvious to the casual player (I didn't see it mentioned in
the manual at all, and only know about it because someone mentioned it in a
newsgroup earlier, and someone at work today told me that Ctrl-Alt-~ is
supposed to bring it up).

I still think the game is nothing special in any way except for its graphics,
but I would like to keep playing it (once I get my computer "back on its
feet"), and I'd like to be able to see things in the game. :)

And there is nothing wrong with that, some people might want that.

I loved Interceptor on the Amiga, a nice simple flight sim where you
only needed a joystick, 2 fire buttons and the throttle keys and that
was it - I would love a up to date combat flight sim where I don't
have to have 3 keyboards, 2 monitors & a £100 joystick with 100
buttons where it is a huge achievement just to have got of the
ground.....

I've very nearly finished Far Cry and it isn't *that* good, yes the
graphics are as good as Doom3 (and no better) but it is every bit as
linear as D3, and really is very frustrating in parts when you walk
into a scene and get killed it takes you 10 minutes to find out what
killed you and another hour to figure out a safe route - that isn't
the ideal gaming experience.

If you want a really brilliant, non-linear gaming experience with lots
of style and atmosphere then Deus Ex is your game. (really must get
round to getting DE2)

mostly 60FPS, occasionally dropping to 30 FPS on 1024x768 at high res
with everything on.

Newf !!! left a note on my windscreen which said:
i've been playing it, actually got to the Hell levels expecting it to
get better as everyone was saying....it never. Its repetitive, linear
and gets so boring after a while it's almost painful to finish it. As
far as I can tell, there is NO AI in this game either. After the
hell levels I was so pissed at having to play it, I turned on god mode
and walked through the rest.

It honestly is one of the most overrated pos I have seen in years. It
does have nice graphics and ran excellent on my medium type machine (
9800 pro), but since when do we all base a game solely on graphics
alone?

Anything which is hyped for the past several years by the press is
always going to be 'overrated'.

I predict exactly the same level of critism for HL2 when that get's
released.
Far Cry....I couldn't wait to get home at the end of the day to
continue playing it. I never once wished it would just end. Doom 3:
The only reason why I'm playing it through was to see what the fuss
was, and Ihave played every other one anyways. I couldn't wait for
the end of the game to happen. It couldn't happen fast enough imho.
How many damn imps do you have to kill in that damn game? Open
door....kill imp, walk across room and kill another imp. Open next
door.....guess what ANOTHER IMP...repeat for 20 hours.

How many times have I seen people using a 123 critiquing technique. If
you wish to post constructive critisism then by all means do so but that
sort of comment makes you look about 15 years old.

Is FC a pos because it's a case of 'Run and shoot those guys, sneak
around those guys, repeat, rinse'?
It's scary atmosphere is ok for about 2-3 hours, then it getsa old so
quick it's almost painfull to continue.

FAR CRY IS GAME OF THE YEAR HANDS DOWN for single player games. Or at
least until halflife 2 comes out.

Far Cry certainly has much more to it that most other SP FPS games so
far this year so you're probably correct. Personally I got bored of it
halfway through so I never did finish it. But with it's very pleasing
visuals and variety of combat it's certainly a worthy candidate. The AI
is commendable, if sometimes a bit unrealistic or downright stupid.
From the CryVision goggles to the Audio-Binoculars FC also gives you
more toys to play with. FC's main fault is some odd bugs which crop up
from time to time but not really game-breakers.

However, D3 does have superior lighting and texturing - graphics don't
make a game but what these help with is the game's overall atmosphere.
Because of FC's expansive vistas and it's advanced bino's which marked
enemies on the map FC didn't offer much in the way of surprises - it
wasn't supposed to. But D3 creates a much more intense feeling of
tension. The background noises have you spinning around to check what's
behind you and usually it's nothing.

The two are quite different games and really shouldn't be compared. But
if I were to compare them to movies then Far Cry would be John
McTiernan's Predator and Doom 3 would be Ridly Scott's Alien.
