Don't Understand

I have a word 2003 document that was generated from a PDF document. The
document includes some wide tables and I want to change the paper from
letter to legal and use landscape layout. When I try to apply the change
from letter to legal I get an error pop-up:

"Increasing left margin causes first column to become too narrow in some
sections having unevenly spaced columns"

I don't understand this. I did not change the margins and I get the error
even when I select one small section of the table?

What is it complaining about? Is there a way around this?

This is a bug not usually seen in Word 2003 but probably arising from an
earlier source of the PDF. Go to Format | Columns, make sure that "Apply to"
is set to "Whole document," and click the One icon (even if it's already
selected), then OK. This activates the "Equal column width" check box, which
sometimes isn't checked when multiple columns are created using the toolbar
button in some earlier versions of Word.
