Domain role transfer

G

GSDPack

Hello, I have two Windows 2000 SP4 domain controllers
which are basically identical machines. We also have
Exchange 2000 running on a third server. One domain
controller was setup with all five of the domain roles.

PDC FSMO
RID FSMO
Infrastructure FSMO
Schema FSMO
Domain Naming FSMO

This server has had two disk fail in a RAID 5 pack that
did not have a hot spare. The Raid pack will not rebuild
due to a media error on one of the four disks so it is
running in degraded mode. According to HP the RAID
controller cannot due a rebuild with a media error on one
of the drives in the pack so I am planning on removing
the server all together and re-building it.

I plan to add two Dell GX150s as additional domain
controllers to have a safety cushion. Then transfer the
five roles to the other domain controller using NTDSUTIL.

It seems very simple, logon the server to be replaced.
Run NTDSTUIL.
At the ntdstuil: enter roles.

At the fsmo maintenance prompt: enter connections.

At the connections: prompt enter connecct to server "the
other dc's name".

Then enter quit to return to the fsmo maintenance: then
enter: Transfer domain naming master.
enter: Transfer infrastructure master
enter: Transfer PDC
enter: Transfer RID master
enter: Transfer schema master

Is that all that is needed or am i missing something?

I now blush. :) I found that this can be done through
the administrative tools on the server.

Thanks for the assistance.

You could also use ADU+C to transfer the PDC, RID and
Infrastructure
Use ADD&T to transfer the Domain Naming Master
and finally use ADS console to transfer the Schema master,
of course you'll need to register the DLL that activates
the AD Schema Console Start->Run->Type "regsvr32
schmmgmt.dll->Enter. After this you can then create a MMC
and add the ADS Snap-In

Yeah, but command line's always better ;-)
