Domain name change

I have Win 2000 server running on its own domain, and nothing in our office
is connected to it, its just running our dns and wins. I have new box that i
want to install 2003 server on. I want to name the new 2003 box, with the
same domain name as the 2000 server. So the question is...is there any way i
can change the name of my server? It wont let me becaues its the domain
controler, but is there anyway to demote the server, so its not the domain
controler?

You'd need to first bring up the W2003 box as a DC, transfer the FSMO roles
to it, (and install DNS if you're running DNS on the existing DC), make it a
global catalog server, and then demote the old server, rename it, and
repromote it.

This is presuming you don't already have another functioning DC in this
domain....

Also - what's the need to change the name, if I might ask/

If you just want to demote the server to rename it you can run DCPROMO.
This not only promotes a server but also demotes a domain controller. You
must realize of course that any Active Directory information on the domain
controller will be lost. But judging from your post this is not a concern.

I hope this helps.
