Domain Controller not resolving name

Hi,

When I ping the domain controller from a client machine, it only pings by
typing the ip address but does not ping while resloving the domain controller
name.

Also, when I do an 'nslookup' i get a response saying ' Can't find server
name for address '.'.'.' What do you suppose the problem is?

I think this is why I can't apply policies to the workstations.

Please advise. best Regards!

This sounds like a DNS problem. With active directory you need a DNS server
running on a domain controller and all computers on the network including
domain controllers using this DNS server. Are you using a router for DHCP?
What DNS server are your workstations pointing to? If you could give us the
IP of your domain controller and the results of ipconfig /all from a
workstation it would help in the diagnosis.

Yes, I am using a router for the DHCP. The DNS Server is also on the router
and all the workstations are pointing to it.

IPCONFIG /ALL for worksation:

Ethernet Adapter local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS suffix: no-domain-set.bellcanada
DHCP Enabled - Yes
Auto Configuration Enabled - Yes
IP Address - 192.168.2.22
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.2.1
DHCP Server - 192.168.2.1
DNS Server - 192.198.2.1

IPCONFIG /ALL on the Domain Controller

Ethernet Adapter local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS suffix: no-domain-set.bellcanada
DHCP Enabled - Yes
Auto Configuration Enabled - Yes
IP Address - 192.168.2.48
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.2.1
DHCP Server - 192.168.2.1
DNS Server - 192.198.2.1

What should I do next? Please advise. thanks

Make sure the domain controller is also a DNS server. This normally happens
by default when you run dcpromo. Then change all the computers including the
domain controller to use the domain controller's IP for DNS. The domain
controller should not be DHCP enabled. It should have a static IP address.
The best configuration would be to have your domain controller with a static
IP (say 192.168.2.2) running DNS, WINS, and DHCP. Just use the router for
the gateway. There are many other considerations like setting up DNS
forwarders etc but for now this will get you running. Use the Manage Your
Server wizard to add DHCP, DNS, and WINS and turn off DHCP on the router.
