Domain controller not found

Windows Server 2000 and Windowx XP on computer. Am trying to add computer to
domain for temporary time. It has worked before by going to Start, Run, and
putting in //(name of server). A log in box would pop up we would log in and
we could see the server. Now it says that domain controller is not found. We
tried both DHCP and using a static IP. However, if using the wizard to add a
computer to the domain it says one must log on as administrator. How do I do
that if the computer is currently in a workgroup and does not pop up a log on
box?

That would not be "adding the computer to the domain"
but rather connecting explicitly to a server (that happens
to be in a domain) using.

You should also find it works better with backslashes:

\\server

And you might find it works better if you supply the share
to which you wish to connect: \\server\sharename

But you problem may well be a Name Resolution issue also.
Now it says that domain controller is not found. We
tried both DHCP and using a static IP.

That is pretty much irrelevant -- any suitable (for your
network) IP will work, whether you assign it manually
or with DHCP as long as it is unique and in coformance
with your other network addresses.
However, if using the wizard to add a

You must be an Administrator of the COMPUTER to join
it to a domain.

You much also have (another account with) administrative
privileges on the domain -- a place is provided to enter this
username and password for the domain admin account.

Thanks for your post. The forward slashes was just an idiot typing error. I
was using \\server\data - which is the name of our server and the folder I
wanted to access and it does not work when it has before.

try this \\<Ipaddress>\data

This takes name resolution out of the picture.

You should also verify that F&P sharing is enabled and that a personal
firewall is not blocking access to ports 139 or 445. The best tool to
verify this is portqry. Just query the host that has the shares from a host
wanting to access the shares.

You might want to run NETDIAG on both host to see if there are any errors.
