Domain controller & Active directory

Small network using Win 2K server With Win 2K pro clients.
Had a serious problem, so had to re-install Server from
scratch, worked ok, and all clients connected.
Unfortunately, Server PC was wrongly named, so
workstations couldn't synchronise, and some dos software
wouldn't work because of network paths being incorrect.

Ran dcporomo to demote domain controller, don't have
another on the network.
Re start server, can't configure server because server
already exists! (where)
Ran dcpromo to re-promote server to DC, went OK.
Clients can't now connect to server, keep getting DNS
lookup error. ( didn't before)
How can I get rid of all domain & user/computer info from
DC with out re-installing from scratch.

Could I just re-install server, and leave existing file
system intact?

see if this helps. it could be that your domain controller was not demoted
correctly
