Domain controller

Hello,

One of our three DC's has crashed (W2k). I want to reinstall the server with
2003 and promote the server.
I have read the article 216498 on "How to remove data in Active Directory
after an unsuccessful domain controller demotion" I was going to go ahead and
manually remove the server using the steps in this article but I just want to
check a few thinks.

The article assumes you have tried to run Dcpromo, I have not because the
server crashed. Will this cause a problem?

The article also says that you should make sure that " replication has
occurred since the demotion " again no demotion has been done. Will this be a
problem.

I can reinstall the server with 2000 restore from backup, demote and then
reinstall with 2003 and promote. I would prefer to just remove old server
from AD, install with 2003 and promote.

Has anyone done this?

Regards,
Richard.

Follow through with 216498, you may have a problem though, promoting if any
of the fsmo roles resided on the crashed server.

Run the following (Below) and check to see if the fsmo roles all exist if
not then you will have to seize these.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255504

Once seized then repromote but I would avoid using the same name.

Try running dcdiag. Look for fail, error and warning errors.

If you don't have the tools installed load them from your install disk.

d:\i386\adminpak.msi (Server tools for remote management of servers)
d:\support\tools\setup.exe (Server Utilities)

Copy the following to a cmd file and run look for error, fail and warn
within the reports. Post any errors you can't figure out. make sure you
modify DC_Name to the name of a dc in your domain.

@echo off

c:
cd \
cd "program files\support tools"

del c:\dcdiag.log
dcdiag /e /c /v /s:DC_Name /f:c:\dcdiag.log
start c:\dcdiag.log

This still needs me to run dcpromo.exe. The server is dead, It would mean a
rebuild and restore to run dcpromo. Is there a way I can remove entries in AD
safley without having to bebuild with 2000? Or is this the only way to remove
the server from AD?

What else does the DC do? Why not just add a new DC
(different name, etc) and clean up the mess left by the
failed server.

Cheers,

Cliff
