A friend sent me a copy of XP which I installed over
Win98 SE. XP is unstable (lots of error and shutdowns).
Recently, I purchased XP upgrade (didn't look at box) but
I can't upgrade over XP. Can someone tell me how to
uninstall XP w/o losing files; revert back to original
Win 98 then use the update i purchased? Then I'll be
able to register it and get support tickets. Thanks for
any suggestions. Is this the best way to proceed?

boot off the newupgrade cd and do a reinstall into the windows dir. We lose general setting.

If you have the win98 disc, you can boot from the WinXp disc, delete and
recreate a partition, format, and when it asks you proof of previous OS,
just temporarily put in the WIn98 disc. This will only work if the disc is
a true win98 disc and not a restore disc.
