doesn't delete errors, highlights in red and line thru word.

Upon trying to delete a word, instead of erasing, it appers in red hihglight
with a line thru the word. But does not delete it.
 
You likely have change tracking enabled, with the associated markup visible.

Turn off Track Changes, then accept all the changes. Can't give more
specific instructions without knowing what version you're using.

Turn off Track Changes through Tools - Track Changes. Also check if your
document is protected with Track Changes same under Tools - Protect Document
- Track Changes.
