Does XP Still Benefit from Seperate Back-Up program?

I am finally getting an XP OS computer. My W2K system benefited from
having a separate back-up program (I use Norton Ghost) instead of the
one inherent in the W2K OS suite. Am I correct in assuming that XP is
no different in that its back-up and restore features are not as
thorough as a third-party program like Norton Ghost?

Yes, you are correct. But better than Ghost (in my view) is Acronis True
Image.

I believe XP's and Win2k's backup is similar, an NT legacy app geared
toward tape drives, and hard drives. It does not backup to CD and DVD
nor does it do imaging.
