Does WMP10 need SP2 to operate properly?

I'm considering temporarily removing SP2 from my system bc of
certain problems it has created with third party software (one
game in particular that Microsoft is already aware of), but it's
telling me, after I initiate the uninstall, that WMP10 may be
affected. So how is it actually affected by removing SP2?

Nevermind. An uninstall of SP2 removes WMP10 and replaces it with
the old WMP9.

I installed WMP 10 before installing SP2 and didn't have any problems. Then
I installed SP2 and noticed the next time I tried to open a WM file, it
brought up the setup options about sending a unique player ID etc. I was
worried but I just clicked next and it continued working fine and has been.
The only problem I've noticed so far is the glitch with the star ratings.
