Does the number after w32x86 meaningful ?

Hi,

We are not able to find a specific version of HP printer
drive that works previously.

I have noticed from the "Print Test Page" that the
additional files used is
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 (Newly
downloaded driver)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2 (Driver in old
machine).

Does the number 2 and 3 meaning ? How should we interpret
it ?

Thanks

Dear Klaus,

Thank you for information. Now I understand that it is the version of
Printer Driver and 2 is for NT while 3 is for Windows 2000. However, it
hasn't mentioned the version number for XP, is it still 3 ?

However, we have used the version 2 one for an XP workstation for a couple
of months and it works fine. On the other hand, the newly downloaded one 3
causes printing problem. Is there any suggestion ?

Thanks

WinXP stores its files in the '3'-folder as they are mostly compatible
with Win2K.

If there are problems using even the latest drivers from the
manufacturer, I usually recommend people using its nearest relative
from the built-in drivers in WinXP. For many PCL-printers, a plain old
HP LJ4 driver will do just fine.
You didn't mention what kind of problems you have, and if the printer
is PCL, GDI etc.

The problem is we have installed a Font DIMM and the manufacturer says that
the external font will be stored in PCL 5 printer driver. In this way, it
works fine in the past.

However, we changed computer and operating system but we are not able to
store the external font to PCL 5 printer driver though we have tried the
version of driver suggested by manufacturer.

I would like to know
1) Is it necessary for me to select the check box - Font DIMM and select the
PCM file ?
2) Is it possible for us to set up a network print queue without printer
driver CD / setup files - What we have is the printer driver that contains
the external fonts being installed on NT workstation ? Is there a way to
copy over ?

Thanks

Sorry, but I have never worked with external fonts so I can't tell.
Perhaps Cari (who is probably reading this) has some hints?
