having tons of viruses sent to your email address?

I say the answer is YES.

There must be a bunch of idiots out there farming these
communities for addresses to send the latest virus to, to
possibly spoof the email address & to just generally add
to their spam list.

My advice is do not use your real email address here.

To do that means they win.
The day I'm paranoid about posting with my real
e-mail address is the day I donate my computer to
goodwill.

If possible set up a specific "real" email address for posting on public
newsgroups.

Or get a hotmail account just for the newsgroups, turn on aggressive junk mail filtering and don't use it except in the newsgroups

I don't like people to contact me privately anyway for the most part. So I
DO spoof my email address. Any person can strip out the obvious
SPAM-proofing if they need to. But computer programs aren't smart enough to
do it automatically.
