Does Outlook 2003 work with a older ms mail server or workgroup p.

I was trying to configure a new computer to login in to a older basic MS Mail
workgroup postoffice. Cant seem to get it to work. Does outlook 2003 work
with the older MAPI MS mail server. Or will they have to always use their
external email address since they are to small for exchange.
