Does Downloaded DMR updates come from MS, or is it possible to download a virus/malware when I DL DR

I tried to view a video file and got the following error:

The File or device that you are trying to use requires a component of
Windows Media Player to be upgraded.
Click Upgrade to download and install the required component.

When I canceled it, I then got the following:

WMP cannot play, sync or burn the protected
file because a problem occurred with the Windows Media Digital
Right Management (DRM) system. You might need to connect
to the Internet to update your DRM components. For additional
assistance, click help.

So, as stated in the subject, if I DL the Update/DMR Component, will
it be from MS and be relatively safe, or could the video file tell WMP
to DL the Update/DMR file from ANYWHERE and therefore allow it to
potentially be loaded with Malware???

Thanks

I'd look for solutions, either here, or on Windows Update.

I can find instances of

"Windows Media Player cannot play, sync, or burn the protected file"

on the net, but no answers. That particular message
shows up, after some prior error condition, typically after
an attempt to determine the license terms of the media.
For some media, WMP is supposed to consult a license server
on the net.
