Does anyone know how to fill in a square bullet point with a X

You didn't give much information is this big white space, such has the
Version that you are working with.
If, by chance, you are using Word 2007, open Word, press the F1 key on your
keyboard and scarch for "add picture bullets"

Just checked, you will get a similar response with Word 2003.
 
Like Charles, I find the detail you provide to be slender in the extreme.

Do you want to create a custom character? Or do you want to fill an "X" into
an existing box on a form? Or something completely different?

As for the first, check the help system for Private character editor.

Or use character 120 or 253 from the Wingdings font as your bullet.
