Does anyone know any decent programs to speed vista up, ive been running home
edition for 2 years now and although my pc is high spec and run fine to
begine with after a time now its slowed so much, i was thinking of ghosting
my hdd and formating but i guess restoring a ghost image of my pc will bring
back the same issues and if i was to format and reinstall everything it will
just be too much of a pain. On the same subject Does anyone know if vista
ultimate is worth the price? and will it help?

I assume you do regular HD maintenance. If not, there are a few "free"
downloads that I found do a fairly good job and have been safe to run on
Vista Home Premium 64-bit:
Ccleaner (run daily)
Advanced SystemCare (one button cleanup with other task buttons - run weekly)
Auslogics Disk Defrag (run weekly - just before Defraggler as it's fast)
Defraggler (run weekly - just after Auslogics as it's more exhaustive)
Several of my friends do NO maintenance of this type and their computers
slowed down noticeably within one-two years.
It will also slow down a lot if you have utilized more than about 75% of
your hard disk. If so, you need to offload some stuff or install a second or
larger HD.

If it's gotten slower over time, there are two likely possibilities:

1. You have installed one or more autostarting background programs
that degrade you performance. Here's my standard post on addressing
that issue:

First, note that you should be concerned with *all* programs that
start automatically, not just with those that go into the system tray.
Not all autostarting programs manifest themselves by an icon in the
tray.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you
actually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon"
option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't
work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab,
uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of
running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell
you, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs
you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but
others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do
is determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what
the cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can try
google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

2. You are infected with malware. This is more and more of a problem
these days. What anti-virus and anti-spyware programs do you run? Are
they kept up to date?

Yes.

Yes, that's a lot of work for most people.

The difference between Vista Ultimate and what you presently have is
that Ultimate has extra features. Whether it's worth the price (or is
of *any* value to you) depends on whether those extra features are
features you want or need.

Will it help your performance problems? Definitely not.

Windows7 is faster, much faster! You can try it now for free or wait
until it is released in October to get it. Vista Home is just plain
bad and slow! All other versions of Vista are better but Win7 is even
better.

Although I agree that Windows 7 is better than Vista (in general
almost every new version of any software is better than its
predecessor), it is not true that other versions of Vista are faster
than either Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium. The differences
between the Vista versions (like the differences between the different
versions of other Windows) have to do with what features each version
contains. Higher, more expensive, versions contain more features, but
their speeds are essentially the same.
