Not quite sure if this is the right group to post this but I'm having
trouble lately with my comp not shutting down a lot of the time. I have
cleaned up my comp with Adaware, A complete virus scan, I regularly keep my
windows updated and I have a firewall and nothing funny is starting up at
start-up (I checked through Run> Msconfig> Start-up) . I'm not sure what
else to look for and I was wondering anyway what exactly does a comp do when
it shuts down cos mine seems to be taking longer than it used to on the few
occasions it does shut down properly. Thanks in advance!

I really have no idea, but I have been hearing of this more and more lately.
There is an option to delay shutdown at the command line level and I assume
also in the Registry. Maybe someone could look into a newer virus that is
causing this problem.
Also, try to open Task Manager on the next shutdown and sort the columns by
clicking on CPU usage until the most active are on top. Then shutdown as
usual and see if there is a program that could be causing the hang.
Sorry, I don't really know anything else to recommend.

Shutdown issues are usually due to drivers, have you updated any of your drivers recently? if so that's almost definatly the cause.

Best thing to do, either reset all the drivers to the default windows (MS) ones, or update them all from manufacturer ( I would try the latter first). do them one by one and see which one caused the issues.

Usual suspects are :-

Graphics
VIA / nVidia Chipset drivers
IDE / SCSI drivers

The shutdown will hang while windows waits for the driver to say ok i've done my thing.

Give that a go
