Most of the new Office products now use XML, so I would assume that's why
they choice that way to distinguish from the old file formats.
Incidentally, this newsgroup is for questions about Access, the database
product that's part of Office Professional. docx is the file format for
Word, so if you have more questions, you might get better results posting to
a newsgroup related to Word.
