docx and doc

In word 2007, does working on a .docx version of a .doc version provide me
any advantages?
I have some files in .doc and I am working on it for a long time. What will
I gain by converting it to the .docx format?

docx is an open XML format and is far more resilient than previous formats.
It was also be more compact because it is several files in a zip wrapper
with the docx extension. If you change the extension to .zip, you can open
the file and see all its components. You will also be able to use all of
Word 2007's features which .doc doesn't support.
