the kb item you referenced mentions Windows NT several times. I realize
that I am on NTFS, but am uncertain as an XP user if that is exactly the
same.... thanks for posting!!

this isn't working: when I click on advanced, it goes into a directory
or explore mode. have I confounded this by doing something with Tweak
UI? I will look over that while I wait for a reply, and ask you to
forgive my being a nuisance.

If you're on the Classic Start Menu, then the steps are different:

1. Open TweakUI
2. Click on Explorer
3. Uncheck Allow Recent Documents on Start Menu

This will turn off Recent Documents and My Documents. You can also set to
have Documents List to be cleared on logoff
