Documents missing after upgrade

Russell

Hi,

I have just upgraded my laptop from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate, using
the Upgrade Anytime service. All appears to have gone to plan, except the 'My
Documents' folder appears to now be empty!

As advised, I took a complete PC backup using Windows Backup. Is there any
way I can get my documents back from this backup? Do I need to go back to
Business, take a copy of all my documents, and then re-upgrade to Ultimate
again?

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

Russell

Hi,

Vista, niether Business nor Ultimate, uses a "My Documents" folder, only a
"Documents" folder. If your profile was carried over during the upgrade (and
it should have been), check under C:\Users\<username>\Documents for your
files.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your reply. When I said 'My Documents', I should have said
'Documents'. I have looked in C:\Users\<username>\Documents, but the
subfolders (Pictures, Music etc.) are all empty.

I have a complete backup of the PC (using the built in Windows Backup tool),
of when it was running Vista Business - am I somehow able to get my personal
Documents out of there?

Would the following work?

1. Use Dell 'system restore' CD to restore the laptop to the way it was when
it arrived from the factory.

2. Use the backup to then restore it to include all my documents etc.

3. Re-upgrade the machine to Ultimate again.

This is the only way round the problem that I can see - do you know of any
other ways?

Many thanks once again for your input,

Russell.

Hi Russell,

Before you do all that, first set folder options to see hidden and system
folders. First check that it isn't under a different (old) user profile from
the previous setup. If not, see if a windows.old folder exists. If it does,
this is the backup of the old installation and you should be able to access
it and recover the files.
