Documents created in Word 2003 now only show in WordPad

I have lost all of the formatting etc of my documents created in Word 2003.
I downloaded the SKU011.CAB fix as suggested - still the same - having lost
the Word formatting I assume it is gone forever. Is that true?
If I need to update license I will be pleased to do so. Can anyone help?

Probably all that has happened is that Windows lost the connection between
the .doc extension and the Word program. To restore it, see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm.
