documents are slow to open

I'm running Word 2003 and suddenly, for no clear reason, it is taking me a
while (like a minute or two) for any saved document to be opened by Word. If
I just start the program by itself, it loads normally, but opening any
existing document either from within the program or by double clicking on the
document icon on the desktop takes a minute or two to load. This is very
annoying.

Any suggestions about what to do?

AEI,
What's probably happening is your antivirus program is scanning your
documents before you open them. I wouldn't recommend disabling this function,
because viruses can come in the form of Macros (mini-programs you can make
directly in Word) and hide in your documents.
