I am writing a Word document into which I want to include sets of large
numbers of figures (two of the sets is approximately 100 Excel charts and
another set is 1000+ png files). Each of these figures must be a standard
size and orientation and have a specific caption. The caption number should
be autogenerated but the caption text will be defined in an Excel spreadsheet
by cross referencing filename (for the png files) or worksheet name (for the
Excel charts) and caption.

How can I do this in an automated fashion?

Possibly using Mailmerge.
