Whilst gazing at my XP Home ed. desktop, looking for an icon, (there's only
about 42 icons on my desktop but, at my age - I have to look at them for
ages in order to locate the one I want!), I noticed a desktop icon
labelled :-

Document Scrap '????????????????...'

where ???????????????? is my Credit Card No. !!!

....now, I do often copy and paste my CC No. into various places e.g. banking
website SSL login page, and a small number of website SSL pages where I buy
things. ...and it's copied from a Word document, (MS Office 2000 - Word),
....so considering that I'm as sure as I can be, that my internet security
has not been compromised, ...any idea how this appeared on my desktop, and
where it came from ? ...my first guess that it was dumped there by Word
....maybe something to do with the temporary files that Word creates every
time one opens a Word *.doc

....any thoughts muchly appreciated,

regards, Richard

Google knows that it is there because you put it there. Ask it about
"document scrap" and it will probably tell you too.

You know you can make folders on the desktop (right click) and put files
into organized folders. Might make it a bit easier to find if that's
really an issue.

Document Scrap probably indicates that it was created with WordPad,
which comes with XP.
If you highlight the text inside a WordPad file and then drag it to the
desktop, it'll be placed on the desktop with the "Scrap" title, followed
by whatever the first line of the file is, or the filename if it already
has a name. If the first (or only) line is your credit card number, I'd
just about bet that you tried to drag it to somewhere and accidentally
dropped it along the way, creating the Scrap Document on your desktop.
If you open it by clicking on the Document Scrap (NOT opening
WordPad), and it's a Document Scrap created by WordPad, it'll open and
the File menu will not have a Save entry but will have an "Update
filename" and a 'Save As' IIRC. Also, if you make a change to it and
just close it, without saving or updateing, it will not ask if you want
to save it; it just saves the changes and closes.
That applies only to files dragged from WordPad to the desktop; NOT
to files actually Saved with WordPad.

I feel pretty certain I'm right. Am I?

Thanx for all replies.

Almost incredibly, [ perhaps testament to my normal precision and accuracy
:-( #!~? ] ...during all my decades on PC's - I've never seen, or
inadvertently created a document scrap, and it didn't cross my mind to
quickly Google on it - which would have instantly illuminated the subject
for me, as mentioned by John McGaw. As suggested by several people, I must
have "dropped" a clipboard "copy" onto the desktop.

....again thank you all.
