My blank document was opening incorrect so I did the Repair from the Help
menu. When this didn't help I did a System Restore and when this didn't help
I did a System Restore again to get back where I started at. I have since
gotten the blank sheet Normal.dot to open correctly but I am still having a
problem.
When I double click a file in Explorer it opens in Word but the file name is
Document 1, 2, etc. When I use Explorer to open the file with File Open or
File Open With the files open correctly. When I open from within Word and
File Open or click on a recently opened file they are OK. Can someone please
help me so that I can just double click my files in Explorer again?

You have the default action set against clicking a file as New rather than
Open. This causes Word to treat the document as a template rather than open
the doument. You can change the default actiojn from Windows Explorer >
Tools > Folder Options > File Types - though
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm should work also.
