?document name or path is not valid?

The document name or path is not valid. Try these
suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document
(C:\program files\qualcomm\...\xxxx.doc)

I'm receiving the above error message when I try to open a
particular document that was sent to me. I'm using Word
2000. I've followed the suggestions without success. Is
there a solution?

Thanks.

After trying a variety of things unsuccessfully, I stumbled on the MS
support page for How To: Recover Text from any File in Word 2000. I
did extract the text, but I have no idea what might be missing from
the page. At least it's a start. If a Microsoft support person reads
this, I'd appreciate learning why this document wouldn't open and what
I could have done to get it open.

This is a user peer group, it is not staffed by Microsoft support personnel
but by volunteers who share their experiences.

The error message you report is indicative of two things, either:
1. Word is not correctly registered and is unable to handle long filenames
.... or
2. The file is not saved where you believe it to be.

The former is easy enough to arrange - from the windows > start > run box
type Winword /r and press the enter key. This will re-register Word.
The latter should be easy enough to arrange also. If you have opened the
document directlly from the e-mail message attachment (a reckless thing to
do) then the file will have been opened in the user temp folder, a volatile
area. Instead save the file to your documents folder, then open it normally.
If the document won't open, it may be not a Word document, and you may not
have as filter for that document type, or the document may be corrupt.
Opening the file in recover any text mode will only recover the text
component of the document (and with some earlier versions of Word this mode
will stick between sessions so don't forget to change it back again). It
will not be a true representation of the original document.
