'document is being used..'

When i open one of my word documents i created i receive a message which says
that the document is being by me and asks, do i want to make a copy? I can
click cancel and it will disappear. My password protected documents will also
ask for my password again once the document is opened, again cancel will to
make it disappear. Why does it happen and how i can i stop it from doing it?
