Document Imaging gone from print drivers, XPS Document writer appe

On Win XP SP2 with MS Office 2003 Small Biz Edition, at document printer
selection dialog, our Document Imaging gone, and a new driver, XPS Document
Writer, appears in the available list. I had not explicitly dropped Document
Imaging (or added XPS Document Writer), but wonder if Document Imaging
disappeared during one of those massive automatic updates (Office or Windows
XP). I tried Add/Remove Programs, adding again the Office Tools component,
Document Imaging, but DocImag still does not appear in the printer selection
list.

Can I recover Document Imaging? Or is the XPS Document Writer a mandatory
replacement with no available roll-back?

Thanks.

Interesting. When I upgraded from Office 2003 to 2007, I had the same thing
happen, the MDI printer vanished and the XPS printer replaced it. All I had
to do was run Office Setup and re-add Microsoft Office Document Imaging from
Office Tools. When you ran Office Setup, was the "Office Tools" white (all
tools) or grey (some tools) when you finished? I had to explicitly
re-select MODI from the tools list.

I ran the re-Install from Windows Ctrl Panel, Add/Remove, select MS Ofc 200s,
Change, selected MODI (grey, I think, not sure), Run from Here, Update-button.

You may have to run the Add Printer wizard, too...this only happened once
and I'm not sure if I only had to re-select it from Office setup, or had to
re-select it, then run Add Printer.

I suspect that MS has replaced MODI with the XPS Document Writer that now
appears in my Printer list. Also, saved MODI files are no longer recognized
by this PC. I tried to run Add Printer, but the MODI does not appear in the
list of printers that we "wish to add".

The XPS Document Writer presents documents in the (IE) browser window, and
FireFox seems to show it OK, too. I haven't decided yet whether to try to
learn XPS DW or beat my head on the wall some more trying to reinstall MODI.
