I wrote a letter on May 15 but when I open the document, today's date is
there. I cannot manually even correct the date to creation date. I have
even pulled up the file menu INSERT and DATE AND TIME and the UPDATE
AUTOMATICALLY is not checked. What am I doing wrong and how can I correct
this problem?

The reason is that you have inserted a date field which shows the system
date. What you need to do is change those date fields for createdate
fields - ALT+F9 change {DATE \@ "d MMM yyyy"}or {TIME \@ "d MMM yyyy"} to
{CREATEDATE \@ "d MMM yyyy"} then F9 and ALT+F9 - and change the date in
your letterhead template so that future letters based on it show the correct
dates. The switches \@ "d MMM yyyy" may be different at your location.

Graham, Thank you for taking the time to attempt to answer my question. I
feel quite stupid but I still don't know how to go about doing this. You
see, I have no idea where this "template" came from. But I use this letter
as my stationary so I continue to open it, clear the body, and save as the
name of the new document. Unfortunately this time, I needed to reprint a
letter of 5/15 and it changed the date on me. I have no idea how to correct
this, even with your information. I feel quite ignorant, but can you give me
a step-by-step? Thank you so much for trying to help.

If you use a document as a template, then there's no way you can recover the
creation date unless you used Save As. If so, you can do so, as Graham says,
by changing DATE to CREATEDATE in the field code. Graham has already given
you step by step, albeit rather tersely:

1. ALT+F9

2. change {DATE \@ "d MMM yyyy"}or {TIME \@ "d MMM yyyy"} to {CREATEDATE \@
"d MMM yyyy"}

3. then F9 and ALT+F9

It would be worth removing the old text and saving the document as a
template (after changing the date field type ) - then create new documents
from it. Then the dates will be correct ijn future documents.
