Document blocks up

I have one specific text area that blocks whatever document I past it into.
The text seems basic enough. I've even pasted it into a plain text email to
get rid of all formatting and then pasted it back into a new, fresh Word
document. As soon as I start adding some formatting, the new document blocks
up just like the old one. What can I do?

Have you tried pasting it into Notepad?

Have you tried using Edit/Paste Special and pasting as unformatted text?

How long is this text "snippet" that's causing the problem? Does it contain a
lot of unusual words (that spell-check won't recognize)?

THanks!
It's not very long at all. It is Italian text on an American version of
Word but I run Italian text a lot so I don't see that as a problem. It works
fine in Word Pad but then I cannot format it as I need to. I will try "Paste
Special" as unformatted but I thought that is basically what I'd done by
bringing it in from a plain text email.
I don't know what else to do.

I don't know if this helps but the errors occur when I try to convert a
normal paragraph to a number list or when I try to avoid a style like
"heading 1". When it crashes and recovers, Word tells me it has
automatically repaired "Styles 1".

What do you mean by "avoid a style like heading 1"?

If this were happening "all the time", I'd say try renaming your Normal.dot
template, start up Word, and test in the new document on-screen.

If you're still seeing the problem, copy/paste the paragraph into your next reply.

Also, which version of Word is this?
