Only if the Web Server is running the SharePoint hosting software and you
have Office 2003 or later.
Setting up a SharePoint site is a job for someone who is properly trained:
you *can* simply switch it on, if you are running one of the Windows 2003
server products, but it really, seriously, pays to have someone who knows
what they are doing to ensure that your installation is SAFE from hackers,
particularly if you are going to enable public access from the Internet.
You can get more information here:
http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/default.mspx
And you can buy a hosted service here:

Otherwise, Jezebel is correct: web browsers make a local copy of everything
they open: if it's not an HTML file, the opening application will ask you if
you want to keep the copy when you close it.
Cheers
I clicked a link from a webpage and a file was opened that had a long web
address that had .doc file extension at the end. The file download pop up
window appears and I am ask to open or save a word file. when I' close the
file, I'm ask to save changes or not. My question is how can this webpage
open up to an editable word file? Thanks
