I went to install Windows Desktop Search but the downloads I got seemed
to suggest I had to take Live Search.

Do I have to install Live Search in order to have Desktop Search?

This article describes the features that are included in Microsoft Windows
Desktop Search (WDS) 2.6.5. This article also includes WDS download
information and the minimum system requirements that you must have to
install WDS.

Wes, thanks for the link. The article does not say what the extra 3
things are but i seems like one could be Windows Desktop Live.

When I go to the WDS web site the downloads link is broken.

Arghhh!

If this link is broken again

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2C-6E02-4596-89D4-05E94F7FBCE1&displaylang=en

it is from the first link.

Click this link...

Microsoft Windows Desktop Search 2.6.5
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911993

When that page opens, scroll down to and click on

Download the 911993 package now.

That will take you to...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2C-6E02-4596-89D4-05E94F7FBCE1&displaylang=en

If you do not want DesktopSearch.adm do not click on the Download button.

WindowsDesktopSearch-kb911993-V2-x86-ENU.exe is what you want, click the
Download button.

Do you mean this DesktopSearch.adm?

..adm files are Group Policy administrative template files.

Group Policy (Gpedit.msc) is only available with XP Pro.

Even if you have XP Pro you may or may not want DesktopSearch.adm

If you do want DesktopSearch.adm see these...
