Do I need to change the drivers when I update?

I have an ATI Radeon 8500 and I'm thinking of updating it
and getting an ATI Radeon 9600 or 9800.
All the Radeons seem to use the same drivers.
So could I just stick the new card in or would I have to
uninstall and reinstall the drivers too?
Do the drivers customize for the particular model of
Radeon card you have when you install them?

Here's what i would do:

1) uninstall radeon drivers (do not reboot)
2) use ati-catunistaller (available on ATI d/l page) to remove anything left
behind
3) shutdown
4) remove old card
5) install new card
6) boot and reinstall latest CAT drivers

I have switched between 8500 and 9700 several times. It's just plug and
play, card is automatically detected and drivers install without help. I
never had to uninstall or re-install drivers. I may just be lucky but have
never had trouble. Every time new drivers come out, I just install and
everything works great.

7 cancel out of all attempts by the os to search for new drivers.
8 install new drivers
9 reboot
10 overclock the brains out of it (just kidding)

Gotta go,
