DNS resolution not working (Win2k Pro)

Hello,

I have a problem with the DNS resolution on a Win2k Pro system. The network
adapter is set up with hardcoded addresses and DNS server addresses, and
access from it to the internet and from the internet to the system works.

For example, "ping 216.109.112.135" works fine. But "ping yahoo.com"
returns "unknown host", even though I can ping both DNS server IP addresses
fine and the "DNS Client" service is running (but not the "DHCP Client").

In the event viewer I get a dnscache warning whenever the computer starts
(event id 11050) that says that the computer can't contact any DNS servers.
Why is this, when I can ping the two DNS servers from the same computer,
and they seem to work as DNS servers on other systems?

Can anybody help me out here, please? What can I check, what is necessary
for the DNS resolution to work?

Thanks,
Gerhard

The DHCP client service is necessary even if you are using static IPs. What
happens if you try to start it?

Thanks, Doug. I didn't know that (and for all I remember, the computer
worked fine without the DHCP Client service before).

I started the service (and to make sure I set it to automatic), but same
result: I still can't resolve DNS names. Just in case, I tried "ipconfig
/flushdns", but that didn't change anything either.

And to mention the obvious: even though there is a personal firewall
installed (Tiny 5), the results are the same when I disable the firewall.

Try using the nslookup command to see if it reports the desired dns server
as being the preferred dns server [compare results to computers that work],
that it responds, and can resolve names. Once you issue the nslookup command
and it finds the dns server just enter yahoo.com to see if it can resole to
IP addresses or not. If you still have problems try booting into safe mode
with networking to see if that makes a difference [assuming another firewall
is protecting the network] and also run the netdiag support tool on that
computer to see if any errors/warnings/failed tests are reported paying
attention to winsock test results also. --- Steve
